PATISSERIE SATSUKI (Kioicho)

パティスリー SATSUKI outside
Which pastry shop is the most expensive and uses the best ingredients only? Its PATISSERIE SATSUKI in Hotel New Otani Tokyo. When Chef Nakajima became head chef of Patisserie Satsuki, he wanted to provide simple cakes which no other shop offered. He decided to find and use the best ingredients available no matter what the cost would be. For example, milk used are the only drinkable milk which is unheated and untreated from Hokkaido, eggs are from chicken which are feed only organic vegetables, sugar is also organic, and fruits are all made by top farmers selected by Nakajima for Patisserie Satsuki only.

パティスリー SATSUKI super case
This results to great sweets, but the most expensive in all of Japan and a lineup of cakes which are called the SUPER series.

パティスリー SATSUKI melon
The first super cake he made and still the most popular is Super Melon Short Cake for 1,575 yen. Yes, 1,575 yen, which is double or even triple of most pastry shops. If you love Japanese musket melon, you won't find any Melon Short Cake better than this. One of the few things I can't eat is melon, but at a friend's party I was forced to eat this and couldn't believe how good it was. I never had anything like it and also couldn't believe that I even enjoyed the melon as well, but was even more surprised when I was told the price.

パティスリー SATSUKI shortcake
Next one he made was Super Strawberry Short Cake for 1,050 yen. If you bought these strawberries at the store one will cost minimum 500 yen.

パティスリー SATSUKI モンブラン 2
Others are Super Montblanc (available only for 2 months in the fall) for 1,575 yen,

パティスリー SATSUKI edo roll
Super Edo Roll for 1,050 yen,

パティスリー SATSUKI classic twin roll
Super Classic Twin Roll for 840 yen,

パティスリー SATSUKI pudding
Super Pure Pudding for 840 yen,

パティスリー SATSUKI peach
but the most expensive one is Super Peach Short Cake (available only for 2 months in the summer) for 4,200 yen. I've never had this before and probably never will since I'm not wealthy enough to spend 4,200 yen on just a piece of cake, but when its available its usually sold out within a hour or so. So, I guess it must be beyond great.

パティスリー SATSUKI melon birthcake
You can also purchase a whole cake as well, but you must order it a couple of days in advance and prices vary depending on the size of the cake.

パティスリー SATSUKI inside
They also have a cafe area where you can eat these cakes and dishes only available at the cafe.

リコッタチーズパンケーキ
And a must eat here is RICOTTA CHEESE PANCAKE for 1,800 yen. In my opinion, its the best pancake in all of Japan. It is unbelievably fluffy and amazingly delicious. I have friends who just stay at Hotel New Otani Tokyo because they want to eat this every afternoon during their time in Tokyo. Its only available between 11am-5pm.

パティスリー SATSUKI case
There are many other cakes besides the super series at regular prices and they are also very good. Super Melon Short Cake has been on the media so often that many people know about it, but actually never had a chance to have it. So, if its a special occasion or even a gift to someone, you might want to consider the Super Melon Short Cake and surprise friends or people who are special to you.

You're in Asakusa doing some sightseeing or just hanging out to see a friend. Wanna get something for your Japanese friends as omiyage (gift) or some snack you can eat back at your hotel room/house. Well, there is the perfect Japanese sweet shop in Asakusa for this. KAMEJYU, which is only seconds away from Tokyo Metro station and Kaminarimon. It is one of the most famous sweet shops in downtown Tokyo.

kamejyu dorayaki
Their signature item is DORAYAKI (Sweet red or white bean paste in pancake) for 315 yen. It is considered the best down to earth style Dorayaki in Tokyo.

The Dorayaki is quit large compared to other shops and the most popular one is KUROAN (red bean paste),

kamejyu shiroan
but they have SHIROAN (white bean Paste) as well if you prefer.

kamejyu matsukaze
Other signature item is MATSUKAZE (Sweet red been paste in brown sugar sponge cake) for 250 yen. Matsukaze is their original item, which many customers purchase as well.

VIRON (Shibuya)

viron outside
The world famous boulangerie from Paris, Maison Kayser now has several shops in Tokyo, but who actually makes the best baguette? Of course, Maison Kasyer is great, but my favorite is BAGUETTE RETRODOR from VIRON in Shibuya.

viron inside bread4
Viron got its name and uses flour from Minoteries Viron, a long-established flour manufacturer from France. In France, a baguette contest is held every year and majority of winners use a flour called Retrodor from Minoteries Viron. However, retrodor wasn't available in Japan until Viron opened in Shibuya. Viron actually has no relationship with the flour manufacturer, but it is the only boulangerie in Japan allowed to use the flour.

バゲット・レトロドール(357円)
Baguette Retrodor is 357 yen, which is about 50-60 yen more expensive than its competitors like Maison Kayser, but the aroma and taste of the flour is simply amazing.

viron クロワッサン
For Croissant, retrodor is used as well and so as the famous Echire butter, which makes the croissant extra rich in flavor.

クロワッサンオンザマンド
To those who love Almond Croissant, CROISSANT AUX AMANDES is also very popular.

viron sandwich
Many baguette sandwiches are available through out the day.

viron inside bread
And many other breads are beautifully displayed.

viron cake display
Viron is actually a patisserie as well, and has many cakes available, but I've never tried any.

viron inside dining
The 2nd floor is a brasserie, where they serve breakfast, lunch, dinner and also is a cafe between lunch and dinner, where you can eat anything available at the 1st floor.

viron bf5
Their assorted bread breakfast called VIRON-NO CHOSHOKU, which comes with coffee or tea, is a great breakfast if you are a bread lover like me.

viron bf3
You get to choose 2 pastries from the basket

viron bf4
and also baguette is all you can eat

viron jam
with a selection of 6 jams, honey and chocolate spread.

ランチ ニース風サラダ
For lunch, a variety of dishes are available such as Nicoise-Style Salad,

viron ランチ 黒豚のジャンボン ロティ
Roast Pork,

viron 鮮魚のポワレトマト風味の白ワインソース
Grilled Fished in Tomato White Wine Sauce,

viron mouse
and White Liver Pate.

viron inside
For breakfast & lunch, especially on weekends there could be a long wait depending on the time you go since they only take reservations for dinner. But even if you don't dine at the 2nd floor, you will always want to at least purchase Baguette Retrodor and bring it back home with you. They also have a shop/restaurant in an area called Marunouchi, which is near Tokyo station.

AU BON VIEUX TEMPS (Oyamadai)

aux outside
Couple of years ago, a TV program did a survey asking over 100 well known patissiers, who they respected and is a pro's pro among all the patissiers in Japan. More than 80% voted for Chef Kawada, who is owner/chef of AU BON VIEUX TEMPS in Oyamadai. Kawada was the 1st Chief Patissier, who wasn't a French national at the famous Hotel Ritz Paris in the 70's. He returned to Tokyo in 1981 and opened Au Bon Vieux Temps. Since then many patissiers who are currently well known, have trained/worked under Kawada during their early part of career. Until I saw this TV program, little did I know that our favorite cake shop chef/owner was a living legend in his industry. And how lucky we are living not too far away from his shop.

Au Bon Vieux Temps is located at Oyamadai which is strictly a residential area, but people from all over Japan come to purchase his creations. There are usually about 20 kind of cakes available. All the cakes are classical style french cakes and different from the current modern style french cakes. Also they are a little sweeter as well. Some are available only during certain seasons, but here are the ones available all year.

MARUICHI BAGEL (Shirokane Takanawa)

Posted by Tokyo Joe on 27.2011 Sweets, Bakery & Cafe 0 comments 0 trackback
maruichi outside
Many of my friends have asked me, if its possible to get a real good NY type bagel here. And just now, another friend poked asking if there was a shop on my list. There are actually quit a few bagels shops in Tokyo now. Growing up and working in New York, I would have a bagel at least twice a week for breakfast. But when I came back to Tokyo, I couldn't find any decent NY type bagels. A company use to import frozen bagels from H&H Bagels, but that ended a couple of yrs ago.

maruichi showcase 2
One day, I was reading a bagels lovers web page and sent an email asking if she knew any shop where I could get real NY type bagels. She recommended me a shop that just opened. It was pretty close to my gym in Shibuya, so got on my motorbike and went. And I have been buying only from them ever since. Its not only the best NY type bagel shop in Tokyo, but in all of Asia as well.
The name is MARUICHI BAGEL.

4cea4386.jpg
First time I was there, I bought a Blueberry with cream cheese and couldn't believe how good it was. I went back the next day again and had to ask the young charming owner where she worked at and her answer was even a bigger surprise. She worked at my favorite bagel shop in New York, Ess-a-Bagel. (Btw, the above isn't a picture of Blueberry, its actaully Cinnamon Raisin)

maruichi 3
Maruichi has several types of bagels which are the following:
Plain, Rock Salt, Onion, Sesame, Poppy Seed, Blueberry, Cinnamon Raisin, Everything
Whole Wheat, 7 Grain Honey, 7 Grain Honey Fig

maruichi showcase 1
Probably the biggest difference with Ess-a-Bagel is the variety of cream cheese options, meaning Maruichi only have a couple, but their plain cream cheese is the best I ever had in Japan and won't tell me where they get it from. They do have other fillings as well like Nova Lox, Potato Salad, Egg Salad and a few others. They also make some cookies and brownies, but I've never tried them.

maruichi inside
They open at 8am, but will only sale unfilled bagels (meaning they won't add any fillings) until 11am. After 11am, they will start selling filled bagels as well. Maruichi is located in Shirokane Takanawa, and unfortunately there isn't much to do in this area, so you will be going there just to get bagels. But if you love bagels its worth the trip.

maruichi wait2
There will be a long wait on weekends and holidays since bagel lovers from all over Japan come to purchase and a decent wait during lunch time as well on weekdays. They will close before the official closing time 6pm when bagels are sold out, so its better to come here as early as you can. Also, there isn't a big sign or nameboard so make sure you check what the store/building looks like at this blog before your visit.

dd maruichi
You can also purchase Maruichi Bagels at Dean & Deluca in Shibuya and Shinagawa on Sunday & Thursday only. But be aware that they are 100 yen more expensive than buying at Maruichi.
