When I used to work near Shinbashi, once a week I ate at a Chinese noodle shop which served knife-shaved noodles and cooked them right in front of you. These noodles are called Tohshomen and the shop is XI'AN at Yurakucho.

My favorite noodle soup is MAARAA-TOHSHOMEN (Knife-Shaved Noodle in Spicy Chili Oil Soup) for 700 yen. Its not that spicy for real spicy food lovers like me, but if you're not one it will be.

xian 麺
The noodles are flat, wider and shorter than regular chinese noodles or ramen noodles.

If you want something less spicier, but there is TANTAN-TOHSHOMEN (Knife-Shaved Noodle in Szechuan Style Sesame Soup) for 700 yen. Its still a little spicy and is good for beginners.

If you like hot and sour soup, there is SANRAA-TOHSHOMEN (Knife-Shaved Noodle in Hot and Sour Soup) for 700 yen.

And there is PAA-KOH-TOSHOMEN (Pork Rib & Knife-Shaved Noodle Soup) for 900 yen, which isn't spicy at all.

Many customers order ZAHSAI GOHAN (Szechwan Pickles over Rice) for 200 yen with noodles.

For side dishes they offer XI'AN-FU YAKI GYOZA (X'ian Style Pan Fried Gyoza) for 400 yen. These prices are for lunch and all dishes become 150 yen more expensive during dinner hours.

They have various side dishes for dinner time like XI'AN XIAOLONGBAO (Xi'an Style Soup Duppling) for 600 yen.

For dinner, they serve MAARAA-HINABE (Spicy Hot Pot) for 2,630 yen per person. It comes with various meats, seafood and vegetables. The hot pot soup is comes in two flavors. Extra spicy and none spicy. It is the most common eaten hot pot in China.

xian 刀削麺
If you want to have real Chinese style knife-shaved noodles, Xi'an is one of the few places that I recommend in Tokyo. There are multiple locations in Tokyo, so check their website and find one near where you are.

川崎 outside
Nabe (Hot pot) which sumo wrestlers eat daily after practice is Chanko nabe and one of the most famous restaurants which serves this is KAWASAKI at Ryogoku.

The menu at Kawasaki is pretty simple and more than 90% of their customers order CHANKO COURSE for 4,940 yen. It starts out with several yakitori's like SUNAGIMO, LIVER, HATSU (Marinated chicken gizzard, liver and heart),

MOMOYAKI (Salted chicken thigh meat),

and then TSUKUNE (minced chicken meat).

Next you get to choose either TORIWASE (Lightly boiled chicken breast)

or TORI SALAD (Chicken salad)

And next the main dish, which is chanko nabe, which will actually be ready on your table when you arrive.

Kawasaki's chanko nabe is a simple chicken broth nabe flavored by salt and soy sauce, which includes chicken

various vegetables, not seafood or port like other chanko restaurants.

After you finish eating chicken and vegetables, they will make OJIYA (Rice porridge), which is the best part of the meal for most customers.

They only have a few extra side dishes which you can order if you aren't full like HIRAYAKI (Grilled chicken thigh meat),

and TORI TATAKI (Chicken sashimi) for both 840 yen.

川崎 inside
There are many other chanko nabe restaurants with a larger variety of food selection, but if you want to experience a traditional chanko nabe in a old Japanese house, try Kawasaki at Ryogokui and make sure you make a reservation before you visit. Its actually close to the sumo arena so if you happen to be watching sumo that day, you may want to have dinner after the match at Kawasaki since the sumo matches will finish at 6pm.

香味屋 outside
There are many famous youshoku restaurants in Tokyo, but probably one of the most famous is KAMIYA at Negishi.

Their signiture dish is probably MENCHI KATSU (Deep friend minced beef cover with bread crumbs) for 2,000 yen. Many foodies consider it the best in Tokyo and my favorite as well.

When you cut it a flood of meat juice will come out, but still crispy on the outside. Most restaurants use lower to average quality beef & pork since the meat is minced, but Kamiya uses the best, which makes it extra juicy.

Instead of minced meat, they have BEEF CUTLET for 4,800 yen.

Its cooked medium rare and top quality steak meat is used instead of rump meat, which most restaurants use.

香味屋 スペシャル洋食弁当A(3,150円)
They have a bento box called SPECIAL YOUSHOKU BENTO A for 3,150 yen, if you want to try various items.

They offer popular youshoku dishes which most restaurants offer like HAMBURG STEAK for 2,000 yen,

香味屋 beef stew 3000
BEEF STEW for 3,000 yen,

TONGUE STEW for 3,800 yen,

香味屋 omurice 2000
OMURICE (Chicken ketchup fried rice instead an omelet) for 2,000 yen,

HAYASHI RICE (Hashed beef over rice) for 2,300 yen,

香味屋 kaki fri 2000
and when in season, they offer KAKI FURAI (Deep fried oysters covered with bread crumbs) for 2,000 yen.

Many original dishes are available as well like WAKADORI NO SAUTE ITATIAFU (Saute chicken Italian style) for 2,500 yen,

and WAGYU FILET NO MUSTARD SAUCE (Filet mignon steak with mustard sauce) for 8,000 yen.

If you want to start out your meal with hors d'oeuvre, they have a mix hors d'oeuvre plate called HORS D'OEUVRE TORIAWASE for 2,300 yen,

or if you want a salad, they offer several and TORIAWASE SALAD (Assorted salad) for 920 yen is popular to regulars.

They also offer good deserts like CUSTARD PUDDING for 600 yen,

and PAPAIYA NO BABAROA (Papaya Bavarian cream) for 800 yen.

香味屋 inside
Compared to most youshoku restaurants, Kamiya's interior is elegant and chic, and you'll feel like you are dining at a fine French restaurant. It opened in 1925 and families have been dining here for generations like mine.

船橋屋 outside
Kudzu Mochi is a desert or snack my mother use bring back for us, whenever she went back to see her parents in Tokyo. She would always purchase it from the shop which invented it 200 years ago. This shop is FUNABASHIYA at Kameido.

船橋屋 kuzumochi
KUDZU MOCHI is a pudding like arrowroot cake. It does have much of a taste and you add Kinako (soybean flour) and Kuromitsu (Brown sugar syrup) on top. Its one of Tokyo's classical sweets, which goes perfect with green tea.

You can also take it out, which most people do.

Just like any traditional Japanese sweet shop, they serve ANMITSU, which is a made of small cubes of agar jell. It is a white translucent jelly made from red algae or seaweed.

船橋屋 cream anmitsu
You can add a scoop of ice cream to it, which is CREAM ANMITSU

船橋屋 shiratama anmitsu
or Shiratama (Rice floor dumplings), which is SHIRATAMA ANMITSU.

They also serve MAMEKANTEN (Agar jell, boiled red bean and brown sugar syrup),

YOSHINO MOCHI (Yoshino kudzu cake with sweet red bean paste).

船橋屋 inside
If its your first time visiting Funabashiya, you must order Kudzu Mochi, nothing else. Its also close to Kameido Tenjin, but they do have a takeout only store in Hiroo as well.

DO・MI SO (Kyobashi)

There aren't many ramen shops which specialize in miso ramen and its difficult to find
one that's delicious, But over the last couple of years several exceptional miso ramen have opened. One of them is DO・MI SO at Kyobashi.

Do・Mi So's miso ramen uses more lard than normal miso ramen. It is also saltier and broth thicker as well. Their most popular ramen is TOKU MISO KOTTERI RAMEN (Special oily miso ramen) for 900 yen. It has boiled bean sprout, corn, egg and also extra chashu (boiled pork), 2 pieces of nori (dry seaweed). It is not oily as it says it is and extra rich in flavor.

Noodles are thick and wavy.

If you don't need extra chashu, nori and boiled egg, there is MISO KOTTERI RAMEN (Oily miso ramen) for 750 yen.

If you want to go spicy, try MISO OROCHON RAMEN (Spicy Mmso ramen) for 1,000 yen. Its not as spicy as it looks and much milder than shops like Nakamoto.

They have miso ramen with curry powder in it called MISO CURRY RAMEN for 1,000 yen.

If you prefer tsukemen try TOKU MISO TSUKEMEN for 1,000 yen.

I would recommend to order Toku Miso Kotteri Ramen if its your first time at dining here. They have several other locations in Tokyo and as any popular ramen shop during lunch time, there is a line of people waiting to get inside.

MAKOTO (Nihonbashi)

Posted by Tokyo Joe on 04.2012 Curry, Yoshoku, Steak & Teppanyaki 0 comments 0 trackback
誠 outside
One of my idols growing up was Jiro Shirasu, legendary opinion leader and business man. I read every single book about him and on one of them, there was a story about a steak restaurant he was a regular at. It said that it was in a small alley with no sign outside, which made it more interesting to me. This restaurant is MAKOTO at Nihonbashi.

Makoto doesn't have a menu. The owner/chef will ask you if you want to start out with some appetizer's first or just want steak. Most customers will have some appetizer's first. Usually, they have EBI FURAI (Deep fried prawn)

GYU SASHI (Beef sashimi)

GYU TONGUE (Grilled beef tongue with wasabi)

and their famous COLESLAW.

Next will be the steak and he'll ask you the size you want to eat. You can choose from 150g, 200g, 250g. They only serve sirloin and you can't tell him how well you want it cooked. Just choose the size and it will be cooked right in front of you on a teppan. It comes with some fresh grated wasabi, which goes perfect with the steak. The owner/chef doesn't use a particular brand of beef. He uses the best beef available at the market.

You can choose to have GARLIC RICE (Fried rice with garlic)

or OKAKA GOHAN (Rice with dried bonito flakes) since no bread is served with the steak.

誠 inside
When you enter Makoto, you will see a sushi like wooden counter where most people sit, but they do have table seats upstairs. Its probably not a place for dates since majority of the customers are elder businessmen dining with their customers or friends. They don't have a wine list, but if you want prime steak in a special kind of atmosphere, Makoto is one of the top steak restaurants to go.

京鼎樓 outside
The first xiaolongbao restaurant which opened in Tokyo was the famous Din Tai Fung from Taipai, but another famous xiaolongbao restaurant from Taipei which opened in Ebisu several years ago is JINDINROU.

Xiaolongbao is a small steamed pork bun with soup inside. The proper way of eating it is to open the bun a little bit and drink some of the soup inside first and then eat the bun. Unless you can't eat pork I have never met a person who didn't enjoy it, especially at Jindinrou. XIAOLONGBAO is 790 yen for 6 pieces and 1,250 yen for 10 pieces.

The regular xiaolongbao is the most popular, but the bum also comes in Oolong tea flavor which is called OOLONG CHA XIAOLONGBAO for 950 yen.

They also have shark's fin xialongbao, which is FUKAHIRE XIAOLONBAO, 6 pieces 1,450 yen.

Other dim sum's like EBI MUSHI GYOZA (Steamed shrimp gyoza) for 950 yen,

MOCHIGOME SHUMAI (Steamed sticky rice shumai) for 950 yen to name a few.

Besides these dim sum's, they have many other dishes like YODAREDORI (Cold steamed chicken with spicy sauce) for 800 yen,

TAIWAN YASAI NO HOSHI EBI ITAME (Stir fired Taiwan vegetables with dry shrimp) for 950 yen,

SU RAH TAN (Sweet and sour soup) for 750 yen,

or if you want some rice or noodles, SHANGHAI FUU YAKISOBA (Shangahai style chow mein) for 1,100 yen is good,

KANI TO LETTUCE NO CHAHAN (Crab meat & lettuce fried rice) for 1,500 yen and many other dishes are available, too.

They do have some Chinese desserts like CUSTARD MAN (Steamed custard cream bun) for 550 yen.

京鼎樓 inside
I personally like Jindinrou more than Din Tai Fung because of the variety of food they have besides xiaolongbao. But no matter what, you must order their regular xiaolongbao when dining at Jindinrou. I'm sure you would enjoy it
