ISHIBASHI (Suehiro-cho)

ISHIBASHI at Suehiro-cho is not only one the oldest Sukiyaki/Shabu Shabu restaurants in Japan, but one the finest as well. It opened in 1872 only 5 years after the Edo period ended, the end of the samurai era. It is also one of the 1st beef meat shops as well. Ishibashi's building is an old traditional Japanese house. A building/house which you don't see much anymore.

You will be taken to a private room and their menu is pretty simple.

Most customers order SUKIYAKI SHIMOFURI (Extra marbled beef) for 10,000 yen.

It comes with two appetizers, and what is served depends on the season. During the summer its usually a jelly dish

and noodle dish. Nothing really special about the appetizers, but they are delicious.

While you are eating your appetizers, the Nakai (waitress in Japanese) will prepare your Sukiyaki or Shabu Shabu. She will cook everything for you and there is no need to do anything.

If you are having Sukiyaki, she will beat the egg which you use for Sukiyaki and cook one slice of beef for you.

Then she will put that beef into your egg, so you can first try the beef.

After this, she will start to cook more beef with vegetables.

Once you finish your Sukiyaki, you can add rice to the remaining sauce and have OJIYA (rice soup) at the end for an additional 1,000 yen.

I've never saw Ojiya at other Sukiyaki restaurants and its almost a must to order this.

You can also have SHABU SHABU as well for 8,000 yen, but Ishibashi is more known for their Sukiyaki.

Ishibashi isn't a pretty restaurant at all. Its old, but with history. Many politicians and celebrates have eaten here, and was awarded a star from Michelin as well. If you want to experience what Sukiyaki was like when it was first invented in the 1870"s, Ishibashi is one of the few restaurants you can go to. They also have a meat shop right next to the restaurant so you can purchase the beef you just ate.

KUROHITSUJI (Nakameguro)

JINGISUKAN is from Hokkaido, where its the most popular & common BBQ they eat.(at home, outdoors and restaurants) There weren't many Jingisukan restaurants anywhere else in Japan, but about 6 years ago, a boom came since mutton/lamb meat has less calories than any other meat and woman jumped on it. Because of this many restaurants in Tokyo opened. In the beginning, people thought it was just another boom, but it turns out it wasn't. And one of the first shops to open and good one is KUROHITSUJI at Nakameguro.

Jingusukan is a pretty simple BBQ. Its slices of mutton meat with bean sprout and onions. The word Jingusukan actually comes from Genghis Khan, the famous ruler of Mongol. People in Hokkaido, eat marinated mutton, but in Tokyo non flavored mutton is more popular than marinated mutton. When its cooked, you dip it in a soy sauce based sauce. In my opinion, its this sauce which separates the good restaurants and not so good restaurants, more than the quality of mutton/lamb.

Put bean sprouts and onions on the grill first and keep the center part open so there is room to put the meat. Just grill it til its ready and dip it in the sauce before it goes into your mouth. JINGISUKAN (Mutton BBQ with vegetables) is 1,000 yen.

You can have a bowl of rice with this, but I recommend to have try their ramen, which is called ZEPPIN RAMEN for 480 yen.

The interior is simple, but modern unlike other Jigisukan restaurants, but do remember that it is very smoky inside.

If you don't have a reservation, the wait can be over a hour so I strongly recommend to make one. Also, for weekends they are open for lunch as well. Unless you over drink, they bill per person should be somewhere between 3,000-5,000 yen.

UMENOHANA (Ginza)

If you like Tofu or Yuba (skin of soy milk), there aren't too many good restaurants in Tokyo since its more famous in Kyoto, but UMENOHANA at Ginza is one of good restaurants. Umenohana is actually owned by a restaurant/food group in Fukuoka. They have about 70 restaurants all over Japan and 9 in Tokyo.

They only have prefixed course menu's for both lunch and dinner. I first visited Umenohana with my relatives for a family gathering and tried various courses, but my favorite course is UMENOHANA ZEN KIWAMI for 5,600 yen. Its a 14 dish course and here are some of the dishes which will be served.

Of course, there are other courses as well, which feature mainly tofu and less yuba, Also, all locations have their own original course menu. All Umenohana locations are furnished with traditional Japanese interior, so if you are looking for an Japanese atmosphere and food, consider Umenohana for lunch or dinner.
